SEO is the process of optimizing a website which increases the overall ranking of your page with search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, MSN, etc. The goal is to increase quality traffic to the website based on keywords (search terms). Let's use a landscaping company as an example. We will call the company ABC Landscaping.

ABC Landscaping is located in Houston, TX. This is just an estimate, but I think there are thousands of landscaping services in Houston, TX. Google returned 390,000 results when I searched for "landscaping services in Houston TX".

In this case, the goal of SEO would be to improve ABC landscaping placement when a user searches for specific keywords like "Houston TX Landscaping". The correct situation would be that ABC Landscaping was the first result, or at least it was on the first page of the results. it's possible? well, it depends. Let's analyze SEO a bit more.

Now don't confuse SEO and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) with each other. SEO uses unpaid or organic practices. SEM uses paid practices such as Google AdWords. We will talk about SEM in another article, but let's go back to SEO for now.
